SMSF advice  ·  strategy session

Thinking about an SMSF? Get a straight answer first.

In 45 minutes we’ll look at your super, your goals and what you’d actually do with your own fund, and tell you honestly whether an SMSF makes sense. Already a trustee? We’ll check whether your fund is still doing the job you set it up for.

Our view

An SMSF is a powerful structure in the right hands and an expensive one in the wrong ones. The first job is working out which you are.

What happens next

Three steps to a straight answer.

Book a time

Choose a slot, or send your details and we’ll call to arrange it. Have your latest super statements and any SMSF documents handy.

Your session

45 minutes by phone or Teams with Andre or one of our advisers. Your super, your goals and whether an SMSF fits.

Your options

You’ll know whether we can help. If you go ahead, we provide written advice and our sister business WE. SMSF can run the fund.

Sound familiar?

Why people book this session.

Your accountant mentioned it

Someone suggested an SMSF and you want a second opinion before you sign anything.

You’re eyeing property or premises

You’ve heard super can buy property and want to know what’s allowed, what it costs and what could go wrong.

You set one up years ago

The fund has run on autopilot. The investment strategy, deed and nominations haven’t been looked at since.

The admin is getting on top of you

Paperwork, deadlines and audit queries are taking time you don’t have, and you’re not sure it’s all being done right.

Is it right for you?

An SMSF suits some people and not others.

It may suit you if

  • You want direct control over how your super is invested
  • You’re willing to take on the legal duties of a trustee
  • Your balance is large enough for the fixed costs to make sense
  • You have a clear strategy an SMSF can support

It may not suit you if

  • You want super to look after itself
  • Your balance is modest and costs would eat into returns
  • You mainly want a home to live in or rent to family
  • You’d be uncomfortable being personally responsible for compliance

Not sure which side you’re on? That’s what the session is for. If an SMSF isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you and talk through the alternatives.

What we cover

45 minutes. Plain English. No sales pitch.

  • Where your super is now, what it costs and how it’s invested
  • Whether an SMSF would serve you better than your current fund, or not
  • Strategies worth exploring, such as contributions, property, pensions and estate planning
  • The costs and trustee responsibilities, explained clearly before you commit
  • For existing trustees, a health check of your investment strategy, liquidity, deed and nominations
  • Your next steps, and a fixed fee quote if you want written advice

Quick answers

Before you book.

What does the session cost?

The SMSF strategy session is complimentary and there’s no obligation. If you’d like written advice afterwards, we’ll quote a fixed fee before any work starts (see fees).

Is the session personal advice?

No. It’s a conversation to understand your situation and explain your options. Any recommendation to set up, change or wind up an SMSF is given in writing in a Statement of Advice.

Do I need to live near your offices?

No. We have offices in Melbourne and on the Gold Coast, and sessions run by phone or Teams for people right around Australia.

I already have an SMSF with another accountant. Can I still book?

Yes. Plenty of trustees book a session for a second opinion on strategy. You’re under no obligation to move your administration. See how our SMSF advice works.

Your super. Your future. Your call.

Get clear on whether an SMSF is right for you before you spend a dollar setting one up.
