Are you retirement ready?

Start with the life you want, then see how close you are. Fifteen quick questions, rough numbers only, and your Retirement Ready score at the end.

When would you like work to become optional?

The age you’d like to be able to stop, even if you keep going. Super can generally be accessed from 60 once you’ve retired, or from 65 whether or not you’ve stopped work. The Age Pension starts at 67, subject to income and assets tests.

Which picture fits the retirement you want?

What do modest and comfortable mean?

These come from the ASFA Retirement Standard, updated every quarter. It assumes you’re 65 to 84, own your home outright and are relatively healthy.

Comfortable ($78,998 a year for a couple, $56,166 single): top-level private health insurance, a reasonable car, regular leisure such as club membership and the cinema, occasional restaurant meals, an annual domestic trip to visit family and one overseas trip every seven years.

Modest ($52,690 couple, $36,548 single): better than the Age Pension, but the basics. Basic health cover, an older car, infrequent leisure and a domestic trip or a few short breaks.

ASFA estimates a couple retiring at 67 needs about $730,000 in super for a comfortable retirement ($630,000 single). That assumes a part Age Pension and spending all your savings over retirement. This check leaves out the Age Pension and uses its own assumptions, so its figure is usually higher than ASFA’s. Many retirees get some Age Pension, and your Gap Report includes it.
